Character and text counts
Your statistics update automatically as you type.
Character limit checker
Set your own character limit to see how many characters remain or whether your text exceeds the limit.
The limit checker uses visible Unicode characters (grapheme clusters). Some websites and apps use different counting rules.

What is a character counter?
A character counter is an online tool that measures the length of text. It helps writers, students, marketers, developers and other users check how many characters they have written. Depending on the task, a character limit may include spaces, punctuation, symbols and line breaks.
Characters with spaces and without spaces
Character counts with spaces include spaces and other visible text elements. The count without whitespace excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks. Both measurements are useful because different forms, applications and publishing systems may use different rules.
How are emoji counted?
Emoji can be made from multiple Unicode code points. For example, an emoji with a skin-tone modifier or a family emoji can contain several underlying code points while appearing as one visible symbol.
This tool uses browser Unicode grapheme segmentation where supported. Grapheme clusters are generally closer to the characters people perceive when reading text. The separate code-point and UTF-16 measurements show why technical counts can differ.
What are UTF-8 bytes?
UTF-8 bytes measure the encoded size of text rather than the number of visible characters. Ordinary English letters typically use one byte, while many other characters and emoji require multiple bytes.
Byte counts can be useful when checking database fields, programming inputs, APIs and systems that impose storage or transmission limits.
Common uses for a character counter
- Checking the length of SEO title tags and meta descriptions.
- Preparing social media posts and profile descriptions.
- Writing short advertisements and marketing messages.
- Meeting character limits in application forms.
- Checking email subject lines and short messages.
- Measuring text for database fields and software applications.
- Checking the length of essays, abstracts and descriptions.
Does every website count characters in the same way?
No. Some services count UTF-16 code units, others count Unicode code points or visible grapheme clusters. Some also apply special rules to links, emoji, line breaks or particular symbols. If you are working with a strict limit, always check the final text in the destination application.
Is my text stored?
No. This character counter performs its calculations in your browser. It does not submit your text to the LifeAfterFlex server or save it in a database.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count characters online?
Paste or type your text into the input area. The tool automatically calculates the number of characters, words, spaces, lines and other measurements.
Does the character count include spaces?
Yes. The main character count includes spaces. A separate measurement shows the count excluding whitespace.
How do I count characters without spaces?
Enter your text and look at the Without whitespace result. It excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Does an emoji count as one character?
The main counter uses grapheme clusters when your browser supports Unicode segmentation. A combined emoji may therefore count as one visible character even if it contains multiple code points. Other applications may count it differently.
What is the difference between characters and bytes?
Characters measure text units, while bytes measure encoded data size. A character can use more than one UTF-8 byte.
Can I set my own character limit?
Yes. Enter a maximum number in the character limit field. The tool displays how many characters remain or how far your text exceeds the limit.
Is the character counter free?
Yes. This tool is free to use and does not require registration.
